- Astronomy in Galway - The “City of the Tribes” is possibly the cloudiest place in Ireland and may seem like the most unlikely place to have an Astronomy Club. But Galway is situated at the gateway to Connemara and home to some of the darkest skies in Western Europe and as with other counties is steeped in astronomical history. On May 12th 1846 a now forgotten astronomer named John Birmingham attracted worldwide attention when he discovered a Nova the brightest in the heavens since 1604 and the first to be viewed using a spectroscope. He went on to receive Royal Academy’s Cunningham Gold Medal for his work, a systematic study and catalogue of red variable stars. Today a Lunar crater named after him resides near to prominent Plato. Later in 1885 Alexander Anderson a teacher and researcher in Experimental and Mathematical Physics at the then Queen’s College Galway was the first person to suggest the existence of black holes and to speculate about what would happen if a star collapsed under its own gravity. Astronomical research continues today at the now NUI Galway where a degree course in Physics & Astronomy has been running since 2000.
